Gandatsetiagon PS Students Transform School Hallways with Powerful Messages of Belonging and Hope

Gandatsetiagon Public School has brought a vibrant new initiative to life –  one that includes messages of empowerment, inclusion, and community pride.

Student leaders from Grades 5 to 8, collaborated to create original quotes that reflect the diversity, creativity, kindness and compassion of the Gandatsetiagon community. Their words are displayed as colourful wall wraps throughout the school and reflect themes of meaningful connection, mental health and well-being

“You matter more than you know.”  Student, Nia B explained that she created this quote because she wants people to know that they matter and she wants them to know they belong.

“Every puzzle piece is different, but in the end, they all fit together.” This quote was a collaborative effort between Dheyvin K., Kareem I. and Zarif A. They wanted to express that no matter who you are, you can work together and get things done.

“When we choose kindness, we help create a school where everyone feels safe, respected, and valued.” Students Wenkuni L. and Savinya E. felt that this quote illustrates how even though everyone looks different on the outside, we are all the same on the inside and how school can be a safe place for everyone.

“You might start small, but with the help of a group of people, you can make a beautiful difference in the world.”  Jessica D., Abigail W. and Carly L. created this quote based on the importance of teamwork and collaboration rather than trying to do everything alone.

“While perfection may not always be attainable, integrity is always within reach.” – Daniel created this quote to illustrate that while we strive to do our best, it’s important to do it the right way without having to take shortcuts with integrity.

A plaque was also installed to explain the purpose and vision behind the project which was led by the school’s Anti-Oppression Leadership Team who each represented students from various clubs and affinity groups at the school. Teachers and all staff at Gandatsetiagon say the initiative has already transformed the school environment.

“It's nice to have student voices represented in our hallways for years to come - it feels personal and special,” expressed Ms. Redman, elementary teacher at Gandatsetiagon P.S. “It's also just amazing to look at these quotes when you feel down as each one includes a special message we can all learn from.”

This initiative is more than artwork. It is a gift from students to their community, a reminder that every voice matters, and a celebration of the diverse identities that make the school a place where everyone can thrive.
